It was 1991 and I was 11 years old. I didn't have much friends but I learned that friends aren't what you expect. Just like the weather, they come and go as they please.
Speaking of the weather down here in Georgia ... Columbus Georgia is different. Columbus Georgia is very ... Its hard for me to explain if you've never lived here. For those that are still here, they're still here because they don't know what it's like elsewhere. The people in Columbus Georgia grow up together as friends and their kids grow up to be friends and so on and so on. They have no reason to leave.
But, I never really had real friends growing up. I always had associates. People I talked to every now and then. Every now and then, while I was in school, I would talk to a kid named Doug. Doug was cool. Doug's father worked for the city and so did his mom. Doug was the only person I ever talked to. Mainly because we were on the track team together.
Doug always came first and I was always second in every race. Doug was also the smartest kid in the school and the most popular. Everybody wanted to be just like him including me. But anyway, he became my friend and that was all that mattered to me. We never hung out or anything like that but every time I seen him in school, he would say hi or bye and and a few "Are you doing okay today?"
I never spoke to him again after school was let out for summer break but I figured maybe I'll see him again next year in junior high school. Junior high school is going to be exciting. I can't wait until school starts again.
